Guide to Madison, Wisconsin

_MG_0983x

I have lived in Madison, Wisconsin since the beginning of this year, and I have to admit, when we arrived here during the rough winter months, Madison was not showing its prettiest face! Since the weather has warmed up, however, I have been able to see a new side of this town, the wonderful outdoors, the great community and amazing food! Here are just a few of my absolute favorite spots:

The Farmer's Market

A trip to the Dane County Farmer's Market has almost become a weekly tradition. You can buy your weekly stash of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers, they have gorgeous flower bouquets and there's usually lots of snacks to try out. All of this is set around the stunning capitol building. During the summer, it gets very crowded, so I would suggest going really early in the morning!

The Sardine

When I first arrived in Madison, I would always ask people for the best restaurant in town. The answer was usually some burger place where you could get the biggest portions for the least amount of money, while sitting in a leather booth and getting free soda refills. Coming from Europe and missing home a bit, I was on the hunt for a pretty cafe with wooden floors, fresh flowers on the table and manageable portions. Finally, I talked to a fellow European girl, and she told me about the Sardine.  This is exactly what I was looking for and more. Located in a gorgeous old building, you can feast on delicious steamed mussels while overlooking lake Monona. This is, without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in town.

Lakeside

During this summer, I've spent a lot of my free time around the lakes. Either lake Mendota, where you can have a drink at the terrace and then sit on one of the docks and watch the sunset, or anywhere along lake Monona or lake Wingra, where I usually sit on a bench and read. You can also rent a bike and ride around lake Monona, which is a great Sunday activity, where you get to see pretty impressive lake side mansions.

Wingra Boats

Last, but definitely not least, my new favorite outdoor exercise: SUP Yoga. On a stand up paddle board you go out onto the lake and do a relatively basic yoga practice while struggling to keep balance. My favorite class is at Wingra Boats on Friday evenings. This is just the greatest way to end a busy work week.
